Legacy Camera Program

The National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) continues to be inspired by the creativity and passion that Outreach Partners put into promoting text4baby and bringing this resource to the women they serve. We want to capture your hard work on film! To help you document your text4baby outreach activities, lessons learned, and feedback from moms, HMHB is initiating the Legacy Camera Program. We’ve decided to call it this because, as a text4baby Outreach Partner, you are helping to support future generations of healthy mothers and babies and are establishing a legacy that should be celebrated and remembered. We hope that providing these cameras will help document the legacy that you are creating – and encourage others to follow in your footsteps.

We have purchased 10 Flip brand video cameras (very easy-to-use handheld camcorders). We will be sending them to partners – free of charge – to record your organization’s efforts to promote text4baby. The goal is to help you share your successes with others around the country, and videos will be posted on the text4baby You Tube channel and on the text4baby website.

How can I get a camera?
HMHB staff will coordinate requests for the video cameras. Only Outreach Partners are eligible (Not a partner? Fill out the Outreach Partner Memorandum of Understanding found here). To receive a camera, send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. that includes:

  • Name;
  • Organizational affiliation;
  • How you plan to use the video (for example, you may have an upcoming event that you’d like to film, or you may want to film testimonials from women who use text4baby);
  • Mailing address (please provide a street address only – no PO Boxes); and
  • Phone number.

HMHB staff will review the requests as they come in and send cameras based on your plans to use them. Remember: We’re looking for creative, thoughtful videos that show off your hard work and text4baby’s value.

Once you’re approved, HMHB staff will mail the camera (including necessary cords and instructions) to you. We will also email you necessary release forms that you should plan to have completed whenever you film someone.  You will be responsible for the security of the camera and all accessories while you are using the camera.

What should I film?
We would like you to film how you are promoting text4baby, as well as testimonials about the value of the service. Some specific ideas for what to film include:

  • Moms in your community talking about text4baby and how the service has helped them.
  • Staff in your clinic or organization (doctors, nurses, midwives, etc.) discussing text4baby’s benefits to clients and how they tell people about it.
  • Staff in your organization talking about how they’ve promoted text4baby (try to include shots of the posters up on walls, tearpads on tables, etc. to illustrate your efforts).
  • Your promotional activities – events, trainings, envelope stuffing, etc.

Is there a limit on the length of my video?
Please limit the length of each video to no more than five minutes. We would like to use the videos on You Tube and the website, so shorter videos are better.

How much recording time is on each camera?
Each camera can record up to four hours of video.

Are we limited to one video?
No, but please do not provide us with more than three videos.

How do I edit the film? Do I have to?
The Flip video camera comes with built-in editing software that will load when you plug the camera into your USB port. Please edit the videos and remove any extraneous footage that you do not want shared. Once we receive your videos, we will upload them directly to You Tube. HMHB will not edit the videos.

How long can my organization use the camera?
You will have use of the camera for two weeks. We encourage you to have a plan for what you are going to film before you request the camera so that you can capture and edit your footage within the two week timeframe.

After two weeks, we ask that you return the camera to us or forward the camera to another partner (HMHB will instruct you on who). Please identify one person within your organization to take ownership of the camera so that HMHB can communicate with this individual about next steps.

If you’re finished filming before two weeks are up, please return the camera so that another partner may use it.

What do I do when I’m done filming?
HMHB will include a completed UPS form so that you can return the camera to us or to the next partner on the waiting list. We will instruct you on next steps once your time with the camera is up.

How will I send the video footage back to HMHB?
When you have completed filming, please send an email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. indicating that you have Legacy video footage to share.  HMHB staff will then provide you with instructions on how to email the footage through Web Cargo.

What will HMHB do with the video?
We hope to post all the videos on our You Tube channel. No offensive images will be posted. Certain videos may also be posted on www.text4baby.org.

Selected footage will be included in a reel produced by Founding Sponsor Johnson & Johnson and shown at the announcement of the State Enrollment Contest winners at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting on November 1, 2011.

Will we get to see the video before you post it online?
The video footage that you send HMHB will be what is posted online; HMHB will not edit any of the videos. However, HMHB reserves the right to not post videos depending on the nature of the footage. Additionally, we will not post the videos that do not have the proper documentation, including release forms and a brief description of your video(s).

What should I do if the camera gets lost or damaged?
Please contact your HMHB staff liaison immediately. We will discuss next steps with you.
